If you regularly pay for your prescriptions, you’ve likely felt the sting at the pharmacy counter. With the standard charge currently at £9.90 per item, costs can spiral quickly—especially if you have a long-term condition that requires multiple medications.
In this episode of Coughy Break, Dr. Geoff Hamp and Dr. Sam McGinley discuss one of the best-kept secrets for saving money in the NHS: the Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC). Think of it as a "season ticket" for your health.

The 2026 Price Freeze: Good News
The big news for 2026 is that the government has frozen prescription costs and PPC prices. This means you can lock in your savings at last year's rates.
The Maths: Is it Worth It?
A PPC covers all your NHS prescriptions for a set price, no matter how many you need. It becomes the cheaper option if you need:
4 or more items in 3 months.
12 or more items in 12 months.
Certificate Type | Cost (2026/27) | Best for... |
3-Month PPC | £32.05 | Short-term illnesses or trying out a new medication regime. |
12-Month PPC | £114.50 | Chronic conditions. (Bonus: You can pay in 10 monthly instalments!) |
HRT PPC | £19.80 | Specifically for Hormone Replacement Therapy (valid for 12 months). |
Don't Forget the HRT PPC
If you are only prescribed HRT, the dedicated HRT PPC is a game-changer. At just £19.80 for the whole year, it pays for itself after just your second prescription item. Geoff and Sam explain how to check if your specific medication is covered and why this certificate is separate from the standard one.
How to Get Yours
You don’t need a doctor’s note to get a PPC. You can buy one online in minutes and start using it immediately—even if your current prescription is sitting at the pharmacy right now.
